The winter fuel haul starts off in February with plowing the road for 40 miles, south west of Red Lake, starting from Flat Lake. The empty barrels have to be hauled out from camp to the winter road, 6.5 miles of lake, over a portage to MineralBay, crossing the bay to the swamp area, through the bush to a small lake, across the small lake and up to the haul road for a total of 10.5 miles. Before you can haul out the barrels the trail has to be packed 12ft wide on the lake ( slush is always a problem, the wider the better) and 8ft wide through the bush. This prepares the trail for hailing the fuel to the camp. The sleigh weighs 100lbs, and the fuel weight is 1600lbs = 1700lbs behind the sleigh.
You can haul 9 empty (45Can = 55US ) gallon drums at one a time from camp to the haul road. Then the truck has to be loaded with the empty drums and brought to town to be filled. The filled drums are the hauled back to the landing ( 6 at a time) and unloaded ( the barrels are rolled off the truck on to 2 stacked tires that take the impact and save the drums from being damaged ) in rows for easy loading on to the sleighs.
