A mile stone in the building of Sydney Lake Lodge's was finally reached, with the completion of the lodge stairway.
The Sydney Lake Lodge Rustic Stairs were designed by John. The question was always where are you going to put the stairs. The problem for a conventional set of stairs was the lack of room to put them. Last fall when laying the oak flooring an S curve was laydout on the floor, there was the answer for the stairs, with a few adjustment here and there the stairs were built. The biggest problem was the hand railing. I found left side left side, a bent birch tree was curving up through some dead fall from a earlier blow down. The biggest problem was now the long right side. Two days later I found a prospective curved spruce tree. The question was to cut it and look for the next piece., When insecting the tree it was found that it was longer than expected, after clearing away the moss and leaves off trunk I found it was 80 " longer, laying on the ground and then cut it off at the root. When it was put on top of the blaster's the biggest piece fit just right - then cutting it and turning the piece 180 degrees the smaller piece fit just right. Could you believe the luck in finding that piece of wood. Putting on the railing took some minor adjustments to complete the hand railings. The center focus on the second floor is the hammer beam truss with the semetricaly curved arches that came off the same tree.

The bottom hand railing was first measured for length, cut and fitted into place - then the top piece fitted perfectly.

The elusive hand railing, was found on the ground with the thinner part pointing up - the thicker end was in the moss and leaves.

We flew into camp on the 13 of May to find that the docks were dammaged by the ice going out on April 20th - the main dock was pushed in twards shore by 2 ft and side ways by 2 ft . The main ramp had to be shortened by 2 ft so that we could drive off the doak with a HONDA atv.

Sydney Lake 2010 Fuel Haul

The first job was to have 28 miles of road plowed.

The distance to camp from the road is 10 miles

The 2010 fuel haul started on March 1st with breaking trail to camp and hauling the empty barrels out of camp to the haul road. The first 2 loads were only 9 barrels per load - slush was the main factor, then the rest of the day was packing trail. Each load to town with the truck consisted of 18 empty barrels, 3 loads per day.

The fuel haul from town back to the landing was completed March 3rd & 4th - 8o barrels were trucked with the help of Macdougall Fuel new stake board truck.

Friday the trail was groomed to take down the bumps, ridges etc. The fuel was halled on Saturday Sunday and Monday - with the last load hauled Tuesday morning & that load only made it to the front of the lodge - the snow was too soft to go any further.

High Water August 2009

August 8th to 12th - heavy rain fall - the water came up 20 inches in 4 days and the another 7 inches by the 17 of August - this is the highest water in the past 90 years for our area -

August 17th, the water is now up so that 2 floater sections can be floated on top of the main dock and tied down to hold them in place.

This is the highest water on Sydney Lake in the last 90 years
From August 8th to 28th the water rose 27 inches due to the rainfall.

Looking at SYDNEY FALLS as you approach them it is deceiving, you are moving at a rate of 2ft/second - as you get closer the hydrolic pull of the water makes it hard to back up your boat.

If you want to view the falls from the bottom, you have to pull in beside to boat and run the motor untill your boat partner ties it up. when you leave start the motor before you pull away from shore.

The force of the current going through the shute , the water falls 7ft and then the wedge of water rises 5 ft at the point

Looking back up the falls - where I am standing, my feet are 10ft below the top of the falls at the center of the dark spot at the back edge of the water above the falls. Notice that the water drops sharply and then comes up to a point and the drops again as it moves away.

Blood Brother's Tournament Day starts at 7:00 am and runs until 7:00 pm. The 2009 tournament was the most competitive one in years. Three different teams had the largest fish in only one class, Team Lewis/Philips - Northern, Team Fahlgren - Trout, Team Harris/Lepinske - Walleye, for a total of 60 points for each team. The tournament ended in Manhaten Bay.

Lodge log walls, trusses and ceiling was varnished by JEB. The spray gun kept on clogging up, this became very irritating for Jeb, down time meant a longer time to Finnish the varnishing. the varnish brought out the detail in the wood and brightened up the whole inside of the lodge.

Lodge Oak Floor

The Lodge project got off the ground when JEB came into camp to give me a had. the first big job was to clean everything out of the building except for the pool and Foosball tables. The next job was to put the finish on the walls and ceiling. The east and west part of the building was squared out for alignment. Then we started laying the Oak in the pool table end, the worst part was laying the floor under the pool table. The west side was next, with no obstructions to face. The center part was challenging, cutting the angle for the joint of the flooring in the doorways. Teh job was finally completed with the back door area. Due to the cold weather the varnishing was put off till next spring when the weather warms up.

Morning John,
It's Sunday morning and I'm not doing so good because I should be there on your lake with Phil's group.They should of got there last night setting up camp on the far side of the lake.I looked up the weather for this coming week and looks good.I would think about right now Phil already had 4-cups of coffee and ready for fishing.
It's now been two years in a row I have missed the trip to your lake,and I am sure missing it This would of been one of the best because of the two new kayaks Phil has built for his two kids,I wanted to be there for that first time of launching into the water.BUT it's this thing called WORK that has kept me home this year.I will sure miss the beauty and the sounds of the north.
Some of the best times are stopping by your lodge talking to ya, and walking around your cabins...Hopefully someday we'll all be flying in some day with extra loads of ice-cream.There's been some great times there...To this day I can still never figure-out how you shared with me the fish's man hand shake and picked me so fast;twisted and turned me repeatedly into the water...Now I know why the bears don't come around you place that often.Of course the best times setting around eating ice-cream with lots of chocolate syrup...Thanks for making those visits enjoyable.
If you see or here from those guys and I'm sure you will because Phil was wanting you to see his new built boats,let me know how their doing.....but I don't want to here about any of their fish stories,they'll be lies anyway.
How's the Lodge going....did you get the foundation completed yet.I have a good picture at home on the wall looking out through the sliding glass doors on the balcony looking out over the lake .. ( what a site ).

Phil Winter Kayaks

Here are the most recent photos of William’s (red and tan) and Leslie’s (green on green) kayaks. The rudder detail is here and there is a close up of the “print-through” that I had to patch prior to painting. Hardware is going on this week and the clear coat is curing. Spray skirts were picked up last week. I suspect that the next photos you get will be the christening. I think we’ll drink the champagne and break the bottle somewhere else. Lets go fishing

Phildo: Wow! It’s been fun to have watched the progress from inception through construction and now to the finished product – as JE said, a more than fitting tribute to Leslie and William – something they’ll have and cherish for years to come as a great labor of love from their old man! Canada Geese have been summering around Sydney Lake for over 10 years now, starting a total of five, there is now four flocks. One flock of 3 one of 31, a flock of 40 plus and a flock of over 70 this year. They have been here since the 18th of May.

The only draw back was the loss of the 1989 Cheyenne - yes a 20 yr old Skidoo finaly blew a transmition gear case, had to rent a 2007 Skandik Skidoo. You would not beleive the difference, like going from a Cheve to a Laomborqini. Hauled barrels from camp to landing, loaded them on a truck to go to town for fuel.

Loaded 4 barrels to a load to haul to camp, 400lb gas or 450lb deisel.

Crossing the border is easy if you follow the quick tips

Have Passports open and hand all of them to the customs officer

Answer all questions asked

Kane County Goose & Duck Hunt

Enjoyed the hunt the other day. To bad we were all done shooting by 8:15 am. You would not think that this kind of shooting is available in Kane County. There sure were a lot of Geese and Ducks. The contact I have is the Hunting Manager for Kenyon Farms (3000 acres or so) and arranges hunts every day. The season closes January 12, 2009. You will need camouflage, hunting licenses, shells (BB shot) and a stool/bucket to sit on, the blind and decoys (100+) are provided. According to the hunt manager there will always be seven to ten other hunters so we will not be by ourselves. Phil and Dick are in the back row of the photo,if you would like to shoot someday, let them know.

Sydney Lake trip July 2008

The large Pike was caught near the Gap on the last day of our trip in September 2007. The morning temperature was 30 deg F that morning and the lake was blanketed in fog.
